The Super Game Boy is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) peripheral launched by Nintendo in Japan on June 14, 1994, designed to let users play Game Boy series games on the SNES console. It resembles an SNES game cartridge in appearance, with a Game Boy game slot on the top. To use it, insert the Super Game Boy into the SNES console, then plug a Game Boy game cartridge into its slot, and you can play Game Boy games on a TV screen. The game display occupies the center of the TV screen, surrounded by a frame similar to the Game Boy console’s exterior. The Super Game Boy offers a pseudo-color palette; players can switch between light and dark reddish-brown contrast pseudo-color modes via the SNES controller’s X button. For games marked "Super Game Boy Compatible" on their packaging, the Super Game Boy loads custom frames stored in the game ROM, with unique frame designs for each title. All first-generation Pokémon series games support the Super Game Boy. Note that the Super Game Boy does not support hot swapping: Game Boy cartridges must be inserted or removed only when the SNES is fully powered off, then the SNES can be turned on. Failing to do so may cause save data on the game cartridge to be lost.
