Star Glider is a 3D flight shooter developed by Argonaut Software, first released in 1986 across multiple platforms. Known for its innovative 3D graphics and free-flight gameplay, it lets players pilot a spaceship through varied environments and defeat enemy units.
In 1990, Argonaut Software created an NES prototype called "NESGlider," using technology similar to the later Super FX chip to boost graphics processing. After showing the prototype to Nintendo, the company suggested porting it to the unreleased Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom). Argonaut then ported the demo to the Super Famicom prototype in about a week.
However, the game never received an official release. Even so, the collaboration between Argonaut Software and Nintendo led to the development of the Super FX enhancement chip for the Super NES, which enabled more advanced 3D graphics processing. This partnership ultimately spawned the iconic Star Fox game series.
Notably, while Star Glider was never officially released for the Super NES, its technology and concepts had a profound impact on later 3D game development.
