Shanghai is a mahjong tile-matching video game released by Activision in 1986. First launched on home computer platforms like Amiga, Macintosh and Apple II GS, it was later ported to multiple home consoles including Nintendo’s NES (Famicom) and Sega Master System.
The gameplay is based on traditional mahjong, using a full set of 144 tiles divided into dots, bamboos, characters, winds, dragons, seasons and flowers. Players aim to match and remove all tiles, but only tiles with at least one free vertical edge can be matched in a turn. Any two season or flower tiles can form a pair. The game ends if no valid moves are left. After winning, part of the screen collapses to reveal a winking dragon; Macintosh and Master System versions feature an animated fire-breathing dragon.
Shanghai was a notable success after release, selling 500,000 copies by 1991. Dragon magazine gave it a perfect 5-star rating in 1988, and also awarded 5 stars to the Atari Lynx version in 1992. IGN also gave the Atari Lynx version a perfect score.
The game’s success spawned several sequels such as Shanghai II and Shanghai III. The latter was released in 1993 by Japanese game developer SUNSOFT, and was ported to Nintendo Switch on December 31, 2020.
Overall, Shanghai has become a classic mahjong elimination game loved by players for its unique gameplay and wide range of ported platforms.
