Fire Emblem Gaiden is a tactical RPG released by Nintendo for the Famicom on March 14, 1992, the second entry in the Fire Emblem series. Developed by Intelligent Systems, it follows dual protagonists Alm and Celica on their adventure across the continent of Valentia.
The game introduces free map and town exploration, letting players choose their route for a deeper RPG feel. Battles remain turn-based, but remove gold and weapon durability are removed; class changes are obtained by praying at a goddess statue.
Set on Valentia, the kingdoms of Zofia and Rigel split over ideological differences. Alm joins the Liberation Army to fight Rigel’s invasion, while Celica heads to the Temple of Mila to uncover the cause of the world’s anomalies. Their journeys intertwine to unlock the continent’s secrets and bring peace.
Fire Emblem Gaiden holds a unique place in the series. While some new elements were dropped in later entries, its dual-protagonist setup and free exploration deeply influenced the franchise. In 2017, Nintendo released the remake *Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia* worldwide, letting a new generation experience this classic.
