Romance of the Three Kingdoms III is a turn-based strategy game released by Koei (now Koei Tecmo) in 1992, the third entry in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. Set in China’s Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, it lets players take on the role of historical rulers, with the goal of unifying China through domestic governance, diplomacy, and military action.
Visually, Romance of the Three Kingdoms III made a leap from 4-color to 16-color graphics, with more detailed map terrain and pseudo-3D animated battle scenes that deliver greater impact. For audio, it introduced MIDI sound effects for the first time, boosting player immersion.
In terms of gameplay systems, it added a new officer registration feature that allows players to create custom characters. The command system is more robust, covering diplomacy, taxation, strategist and general appointments, civil official assignments, and land and naval battles, providing a complete domestic and diplomatic system. The game includes 6 selectable era scenarios, supports up to 8 players, and features 46 cities, 22 passes, and 531 officers, delivering an unprecedented gaming experience.
Regarded as a landmark title at the time, Romance of the Three Kingdoms III laid the foundation for subsequent entries in the series and remains beloved by players.
