Journey to the West World is an action RPG developed by Japan's NMK and published by Jaleco, released for the FC platform on November 11, 1988. Based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, players take on the role of Sun Wukong on a quest to rescue Tang Sanzang and ten monks abducted by the Bull Demon King.
The game features 11 side-scrolling levels, with players exploring iconic locations like the Flaming Mountains and the Cave of the Silk Spiders. Sun Wukong starts with a short sword; by defeating enemies and collecting coins, players can buy shields, armor, boots and other gear from shops to boost survivability. The ultimate weapon, the Golden Cudgel, unleashes a full-screen shockwave.
Known for its high difficulty, the game has varied, challenging enemy attacks—one misstep can lead to death. While its story and art differ from the Journey to the West Chinese players know, it holds unique charm as a standalone game.
Notably, it re-released for Nintendo Switch on December 19, 2024 as "JALECOlle Famicom Ver. Saiyuuki World", adding English translation, detailed UI info, rewind, quick save/load, achievements and more to let players enjoy this classic on modern platforms.
