Renegade (Japanese: Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun) is a 1986 arcade game developed by Technōs Japan and published by Taito. As the first entry in the Kunio-kun series, it was later ported to multiple platforms including the NES. Set against 1980s Japanese "delinquent youth" culture, players take on the role of Kunio, the tough leader of Nekketsu High, who fights rival gangs across four levels—Shinjuku Station, Tokyo Bay Highway, Shinjuku Kabukicho, and a yakuza headquarters—to rescue his friend Hiroshi. Each stage culminates in a boss fight, with the final goal of saving Hiroshi. Featuring side-scrolling beat 'em up gameplay, players use various moves like punches, flying kicks, and back suplexes. A pioneer of the beat 'em up genre, Renegade had a profound influence on later action games.
