Ninja Kid is a 1986 action platformer developed by Tose and published by Bandai for the NES. Its Japanese version, *GeGeGe no Kitarō: Yōkai Dai Makyo*, is based on the 1985 anime and manga of the same name. Since the source work was little-known outside Japan, the North American release was rebranded as Ninja Kid, with all Kitarō-related elements removed. The game opens on a top-down map with multiple arches, each leading to a distinct side-scrolling mission; mission types can be identified by the arch shape. At the end of each mission, two doors appear: one returns to the map, the other leads to a vertically scrolling tower with a mini-boss at the top. Defeating the mini-boss sends the player back to the map. Power-ups spawn randomly during missions, some granting temporary speed boosts, others summoning an owl to mark the correct door back to the map. After collecting a scroll, players can head to the hut at the map’s center to unlock the fortress and challenge the map’s main boss. In the Japanese version, the protagonist is Kitarō, whose primary weapon is his hair instead of darts. Secondary weapons include a flying finger, vest, and geta—functionally identical to those of the US protagonist Kyo, but with different visuals. Some stages feature Western film monsters like Frankenstein and Count Dracula, with their boss being Back Beard, leader of the "Western yōkai." The scroll that unlocks the fortress is a crystal ball in the original version. Summoned allies also differ, being Nurikabe, Konaki-jiji, and Sunakake-baba. Ninja Kid was the 8th best-selling Famicom game in Japan in 1986, with 1.25 million copies sold.
