Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (released as Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest in Japan) is a 1992 role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. A spin-off of the Final Fantasy series, it was designed to give new players a simplified RPG experience. It first launched in North America, then came to Europe under the name Mystic Quest Legend. The story follows a young hero named Benjamin, who sets out to recover four stolen crystals that control the world’s four elemental powers. Players guide Benjamin across different regions, fight enemies, solve puzzles, and ultimately restore balance to the world. Its gameplay differs from mainline Final Fantasy titles. Random encounters are removed; instead, enemies are visible on the map, so players can choose to fight them or not. It also adds action-adventure elements: outside of battle, players can use weapons to explore, like chopping down trees or placing bombs to open new paths. While it received mixed reviews and sales in North America and Japan, with critics noting its simplified systems and shallow story, it has since been called a "beginner’s Final Fantasy," and its music has earned praise.
