Mirai Shinwa Jarvas is a 1987 NES RPG by Taito, following time traveler Jarvas from the future who journeys to the ancient past to conquer it and rule, hoping to avert a future catastrophe.
The game uses a top-down perspective with real-time, on-screen combat—no separate battle screens. Players can visit towns to buy/sell items and gear, and join guilds to switch classes, each with a unique look; for example, the swordsman class resembles a Viking warrior.
Upon release, it received mixed-to-negative feedback. Many players criticized its lack of clear guidance: it gives no initial info on the player’s location or objectives. Players must explore on their own to find towns, join guilds, and progress. Leveling up only happens by returning to a guild after earning enough experience.
Overall, Mirai Shinwa Jarvas tried to blend elements of popular 1980s titles like Dragon Warrior II and The Legend of Zelda, but fell short of expectations due to unclear direction and design flaws.
