Metal Max is a classic RPG developed by Crea-Tech and published by Data East for the Nintendo Famicom on May 24, 1991. As the first entry in the series, it is renowned for its open world and unique tank system.
Set in a post-apocalyptic near-future, the game takes place in a world where urban civilization has collapsed, with mutated creatures and rogue machines roaming the land. Players take on the role of a young adventurer who drives a tank to explore the wilderness, defeat wanted criminals, and earn bounties. The game features a dual human-vehicle combat system, allowing players to freely customize their tanks with various weapons and equipment to boost combat power.
Metal Max is celebrated for its high degree of freedom: players can choose the order of missions freely and even end the game at any time. Its non-linear storyline and multiple endings keep each playthrough fresh and engaging.
On September 29, 1995, a remake titled *Metal Max Returns* was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, featuring significantly improved graphics and sound, plus new wanted enemies and items.
The Metal Max series has a large fan base in Japan, with the original game selling around 150,000 copies there. Its unique worldbuilding and gameplay systems have had a lasting impact on later RPGs.
