Magic Knight Rayearth is a shoujo manga created by the Japanese manga team CLAMP, first serialized in Nakayoshi magazine in 1993. Blending fantasy and sci-fi elements, it follows three girls summoned to the otherworld of Cephiro to become "Magic Knights" tasked with saving the world.
In 1994, a 49-episode TV anime adaptation aired in Japan, further boosting the work's popularity.
The franchise also has multiple game adaptations. The 1995 SNES title of the same name lets players control protagonists Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji, experiencing their adventures in Cephiro. As an RPG, players solve puzzles and fight battles to gradually strengthen their characters and ultimately rescue the trapped Princess Emeraude.
A SEGA SATURN adaptation of Magic Knight Rayearth was also released, with different gameplay from the SNES version that focuses more on action-puzzle elements.
Overall, Magic Knight Rayearth, with its unique worldview and rich story, became one of the most beloved works of the 1990s, and still boasts a large global fanbase to this day.
