Game Introduction

Kirby's Adventure is an action platformer developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, released for the NES in 1993. As the second entry in the Kirby series, it first introduced the iconic Copy Ability system. Players control the cute pink hero Kirby, journey through seven dream worlds, repair the broken Star Rod, and save Dream Land from Nightmare. With diverse level design, beautiful pixel art, and catchy music, it pushed the NES to its limits and became a late-era classic for the console.

Gameplay

Game Overview

Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, Kirby's Adventure arrived on the Japanese Famicom on March 23, 1993, reached North America later that year and came to Europe shortly afterwards. King Dedede has broken the Star Rod that powers the Fountain of Dreams into seven pieces and handed them out to his friends, so Kirby has to cross seven worlds to put it back together. This is the first game in the series to feature Copy Abilities, and it is one of the best-looking titles Nintendo ever put on the hardware.

Core Gameplay

Inhale an enemy, press down to swallow it, and you take its power - the game has twenty-four of them, including Sword, Cutter, Hammer, Spark, Stone, Parasol, Laser, UFO, Wheel and Mike. Press Select to drop an ability, and if an enemy knocks it out of you it pops back out as a star that you can inhale and reclaim. Each of the seven worlds is a hub map of small stages ending in a boss fight, and the doors on the map unlock as you clear stages. Scattered in between are three minigames - Quick Draw, Egg Catcher and Crane Fever - plus an Arena for grinding power-ups and a Museum that hands them out for free.

Single-Player Experience

It is strictly one player, but the cartridge has a battery: progress saves automatically after every stage you clear, across three save slots, which was a genuine luxury on the NES in 1993 and means no passwords at all. The save only records how far you have progressed and which doors are open - lives, health, your current ability and your score are not kept. At 6 megabits with an MMC3 mapper, it is among the last big first-party NES releases, and it was later remade in full on Game Boy Advance as Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

Frequently Asked Questions

Twenty-four. Different enemies give different powers - Sword, Hammer, Spark, Stone, Parasol, Laser, UFO, Wheel and Mike among them - while some enemies give you nothing at all when swallowed.

The cartridge has a battery and saves automatically after every stage you clear, across three save files. No passwords. The save only records stage progress and which doors you have opened.

No, this one is strictly single-player.

The main path through seven worlds takes roughly four to six hours on a first run. Filling in the Museum, the Arena and every Big Switch adds a fair bit more.

If any doors on a world map are still brown, there are rooms you have not found - turning them all white unlocks the remaining minigames and extra rooms. Each world also hides a Big Switch that takes a detour to reach.
