Killer Instinct is a fighting game developed by Rare. It first launched in arcades in 1994, then was ported to the Super Nintendo (SNES) and Game Boy in 1995. It’s famous for its unique combo system and diverse character roster.
Set in a fighting tournament hosted by the powerful Ultratech corporation, contestants include human warriors, experimental creatures, and aliens. Players can choose from up to 10 characters, each with unique skills and combo moves.
Killer Instinct introduced innovative mechanics like auto-doubles and combo breakers, making combat smoother and more varied. It uses a double health bar system—players must deplete both of their opponent’s health bars to win.
The game’s soundtrack, composed by Rare’s Robin Beanland and Graeme Norgate, was widely loved by players. First-run limited editions of the SNES version included a bonus soundtrack CD called “Killer Cuts.”
Killer Instinct received widespread acclaim upon release, and is regarded as one of the best fighting games of its era. Its success led Rare to release the sequel Killer Instinct 2 in 1996, and reboot the franchise on Xbox One in 2013.
