Family Mahjong is a mahjong game developed by Japanese firm Nihon Bussan and released by Namco for the Nintendo Famicom in 1987. It follows traditional Japanese mahjong rules, pitting players against three AI opponents, and offers three difficulty tutorial modes to help beginners master basic rules and strategies. Real-time digitized voice prompts announce actions like "pon", "kan", and "ron" during gameplay, making the experience more vivid and authentic. As one of the few mahjong titles on the Famicom at the time, it gained widespread popularity in Japan. Notably, Nihon Bussan developed three Famicom mahjong games in just two months in 1987: besides Family Mahjong, there was Irem's Mahjong Kazoku and Capcom's Ide Yosuke Meijin no Jissen Mahjong, expanding the platform's game library and giving mahjong fans more options. Overall, Family Mahjong is a classic Famicom mahjong title loved by retro game fans to this day, thanks to its accessible tutorials, realistic voice cues, and traditional gameplay.
