Its title pays homage to the 1927 novel *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre* and its 1948 film adaptation. In the opening story, the leader of the Water Buffalo Lodge decides to retire and announces a contest: whoever finds the legendary Treasure of Sierra Madrock will become the new Grand Poobah. Players control Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, racing to find the treasure before other Water Buffalo members, and even their wives Wilma and Betty. The game features a unique board game-style map design, where players roll a die to determine how many spaces Fred or Barney moves on the map. Depending on the space they land on, players may need to complete platforming levels, challenge bosses, visit shops, and more. In some areas, Wilma and Betty will appear; if they run into their respective husbands, they will drag them back to a specific spot on the map. In platforming levels, characters must move from left to right (and sometimes right to left), avoiding hazards and defeating enemies like dinosaurs and Water Buffalo members. Fred and Barney use clubs as weapons. The overall difficulty is moderate; besides side-scrolling action levels, it also includes more challenging minigames, such as races against other Water Buffalo members in a stadium, where winning grants key items to unlock new worlds.
