Final Fantasy II is a fantasy RPG released by Square in 1988 for the Nintendo Famicom, the second entry in the Final Fantasy series. It follows four youths whose home is destroyed and parents killed by the Palamecian Empire; three survivors join the rebellion to gain magic/weapons, destroy the enemy superweapon, rescue their leader, and ultimately defeat the empire and emperor to save the world.
This title introduced a "proficiency system" replacing traditional EXP-based leveling: a character’s stats rise based on their battle actions—e.g., frequent use of a weapon boosts its proficiency, increasing physical attack power and accuracy.
It also added a "keyword memory" feature: players can "remember" specific terms from NPC dialogue, then ask other NPCs about them to uncover more info or unlock new story beats.
Final Fantasy II has been remade/ported to many platforms, including WonderSwan Color, PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation Portable, iOS, and Android. The latest remakes launched globally for iOS in 2010 and Android in 2012.
The game’s score was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, with rearrangements by Tsuyoshi Sekito for the WonderSwan Color, PlayStation, and Game Boy Color versions. Its soundtrack has been performed at official concerts and featured on live albums like *20020220 Music from Final Fantasy* and *Distant Worlds - Music from Final Fantasy*.
Initially released only in Japanese, Final Fantasy II drew little attention from critics outside Japan, but later remakes earned positive reviews. Elements it introduced, such as Chocobos and recurring character Cid, became staples of the franchise.
