Doomsday Warrior is a 2D fighting game developed by Laser Soft. It launched in Japan for the Super Famicom on November 20, 1992, and came to North America’s Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in March 1993. Its Japanese title is *Taiketsu!! Brass Numbers*. In the game, players take on the role of a member of the Doom Squad, a group controlled by the evil wizard Main that threatens Earth. The chosen character betrays the squad, becomes a "Doomsday Warrior," and sets out to defeat other squad members before facing Main in a final showdown. There are seven playable characters, each with unique backstories and abilities: - **Sledge**: A hot-tempered warrior who is the first to betray the Doom Squad to protect Earth. - **Layban**: A former army soldier who later joined the Doom Squad. - **Amon**: The squad’s muscle and lead singer of a heavy metal band. - **Daisy**: A half-human, half-plant hybrid of unknown origin. - **P. Lump**: A massive martial artist who breathes fire and uses his long braid as a weapon. - **Grimrock**: A lizard man from an alien world who attacks with claws and his tail. - **Nuform**: An amorphous liquid metal being that can shift into various weapons and defensive shields. The battle system lets players pick their next opponent after each fight, giving a degree of freedom. After winning, players earn ability points to boost stats like arm strength, leg strength, defense, health, and soul power. After defeating all Doom Squad members, players face three final bosses in a row: - **Shadow**: An amorphous dark creature that mimics the player’s skills. - **Ashura**: Main’s strongest warrior, with incredible power and demonic energy. - **Main**: The wizard controlling the Doom Squad, who attacks with lightning, fire, light, and wields a sword of light. Doomsday Warrior received mixed reviews upon release. Japanese gaming magazine *Famitsu* scored it 24 out of 40, while *Power Unlimited* gave it 75%, criticizing it as a boring fighting game. Overall, Doomsday Warrior was part of the 1990s fighting game boom. While it did not reach the heights of top titles in the genre, its distinct character designs and battle system offered players a unique gaming experience.
