Brawl Brothers is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed and published by Jaleco for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. As the second entry in the Rushing Beat series, it follows Rival Turf! and precedes the 1993 release The Peace Keepers.
Gameplay is similar to Final Fight, where players control characters to defeat enemies across multiple stages. Besides standard food pickups that restore health, players can grab weapons like clubs, guns, and grenades. The game also features an "Angry Mode" that activates when a character takes enough damage, boosting both attack and defense stats.
Players can choose from five playable characters:
- **Hack (Rick Norton)**: A street fighter skilled in moves like the German suplex.
- **Slash (Douglas Bild)**: A cop with powerful techniques such as the power bomb.
- **Lord J**: A judo master with slow movement but devastating throws.
- **Kazan**: A fast ninja who can split into copies to attack enemies.
- **Wendy Milan**: A quick professional wrestler with a variety of powerful throws.
There are differences between the North American and Japanese versions. Players can unlock Japanese version content in the North American release via a specific cheat code. The Japanese version has different character names and adjusted level design—for example, maze-like stages were removed, and ending animations were added. Additionally, some of Douglas Bild’s attack moves are more direct in the Japanese version, but were altered in the North American release to meet local censorship standards.
Brawl Brothers received positive reviews upon launch. Nintendo Magazine System gave it an 84% score, calling it "a great beat 'em up despite a few minor issues." AllGame rated it 3 out of 5 stars, praising its graphics, music, and the increased number of enemies and moves compared to its predecessor, but noting it falls short of games like Street Fighter II in terms of speed, precision, and polish.
Overall, Brawl Brothers is a classic beat 'em up that has attracted many players with its diverse character roster, varied weapon system, and unique Angry Mode, making it one of the most beloved titles on the Super Nintendo platform.
