Boxing Legends of the Ring is a boxing game developed by Sculptured Software and published by Electro Brain. Released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo (SNES) and Sega Genesis, it is known for its realistic boxing experience and rich game modes.
Players can choose from eight legendary middleweight boxers, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, James Toney, Marvin Hagler, Jake LaMotta, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Rocky Graziano.
The game features three modes:
- **Exhibition**: Pick any boxer for a single match, with single-player vs. CPU or two-player options.
- **Career**: Create your own boxer, start in junior bouts, and work your way up to challenge all legends for the world title. Note: A first loss triggers a warning; a second ends the game, requiring a password to continue or a fresh start.
- **Battle of the Legends**: Play out matchups between the legendary boxers.
The game uses a unique over-the-shoulder perspective from your boxer’s view to boost immersion. Boxers can only sidestep left/right, not move forward/backward. Players can throw various punches: left jab, cross to the head, hook to the body, and uppercut to the head (all except the jab can be thrown with either hand). Plus, a "super punch"—a more powerful right cross or right uppercut—is available once per round, with an extra use earned per knockdown. Defensive moves include blocking, dodging, and clinching.
The top of the screen shows both boxers’ portraits, which display damage like cuts and bruises as the fight progresses, reflecting their health. A boxing glove-shaped stamina bar shows remaining strength; it depletes with more punches, weakening their power.
In the North American version, fights take place at the Las Vegas Hilton with HBO ad banners around the ring. The Japanese version uses a regular boxing arena, with banners replaced by the publisher’s name.
With its authentic boxing feel and diverse modes, Boxing Legends of the Ring was one of the most popular boxing games of its era.
