Play Bomberman (USA) - Iconic NES Action Puzzle Game
Game Introduction
Bomberman brings explosive strategy to the NES in this timeless classic from Hudson Soft. Navigate through 50 grids, strategically placing bombs to eliminate enemies and uncover the hidden exit. Every level is a test of timing and planning as you hunt for power-ups to increase your blast radius and speed. Known for its perfect difficulty curve and iconic character design, Bomberman is an essential pillar of any 8-bit collection and a masterclass in game design.
Gameplay
Game Overview
Hudson Soft released Bomberman for the Famicom in Japan on December 19, 1985, and published the NES version in North America in 1987. The hero is a robot working in an underground bomb factory who hears that any robot that reaches the surface gets to become human, so he starts blowing his way up through fifty mazes with the very bombs he was built to make.
Core Gameplay
Each of the fifty stages is a grid of indestructible pillars and destructible bricks, and you have two jobs: wipe out every enemy on the field, then find the exit hidden under one of the bricks - all against a countdown clock. Power-ups come in four main flavours: Fire extends the blast radius, Bomb lets you place more than one at a time, the skates raise your walking speed, and the remote control lets you detonate on your own timing. Push further and you can end up walking through walls, through your own bombs, and through your own blasts. Letting the timer run out does not kill you outright; it spawns a swarm of much nastier enemies instead. Bombing the exit once it is uncovered does the same thing.
Single-Player Experience
This one has no versus mode at all - it is a solo maze campaign, and the four-player battle mode that defines Bomberman for most people arrived with later sequels. Lose all your lives and the game hands you a twenty-character password made up only of the letters A through P; write it down and you can resume at that stage. Every fifth stage is a bonus round where nothing can kill you, including your own bombs, so you can farm points in peace. Clear all fifty and Bomberman reaches the surface and turns human - an ending that ties him directly to Hudson's earlier Lode Runner.
Game Tips
- Fifty stages, each requiring you to clear every enemy and bomb your way to a hidden exit before the clock runs out
- Four core power-ups: Fire for blast range, Bomb for simultaneous placement, skates for speed, remote control for manual detonation
- Late-game upgrades let you walk through walls, through bombs and even through your own explosions
- A bonus stage every fifth level where nothing can kill you, including your own bombs
- Twenty-character password using only the letters A to P, given when you lose your last life
- Running out the clock does not kill you - it spawns a swarm of much deadlier enemies
- Reach the surface and Bomberman becomes human, tying him to Hudson's Lode Runner
Frequently Asked Questions
No. This is a solo maze campaign from start to finish - the multiplayer battle mode the series is famous for was introduced in later sequels.
There are fifty stages, and a comfortable player clears them in about an hour. Newcomers spend most of that time hunting for the brick that hides the exit.
When you lose your last life the game shows a twenty-character password built only from the letters A through P. Write it down and enter it at the title screen to resume from that stage.
You do not die instantly - instead a swarm of much tougher enemies appears, which usually amounts to the same thing. Bombing the exit after you uncover it triggers the same swarm.
The exit is hidden under a brick and, unlike power-ups, it never flashes to give itself away. Clear the enemies first, then work through the bricks row by row - you will pick up the stage's power-ups along the way.
