Batman: Revenge of the Joker is a side-scrolling action game developed by Sunsoft. It first launched on the NES in 1991, and was ported to the Sega Genesis by Ringler Studios in 1992. Based on DC Comics' Batman, players take on the role of the Dark Knight to fight his arch-nemesis, the Joker.
The story follows the Joker escaping Arkham Asylum and plotting to build missiles with stolen metal to threaten Gotham City. Players control Batman across multiple levels, defeat the Joker's henchmen, and stop his evil plan.
In the game, Batman has a wrist launcher that fires basic bullets by default. By collecting power-ups in levels, players can upgrade weapons to get different ammo types like crossbow bolts, sonic neutralizers, and shield stars. Each weapon has unique attacks, and players can charge up to release stronger strikes. Batman also has a slide ability to attack enemies or dodge obstacles.
There are seven levels in total, set in locations like Gotham Cathedral, the Joker's warehouse, snowy mountains, a refinery, underground pipes, an ammo base, and Ha-Ha Island. Each level has unique enemies and challenges, requiring players to use various skills and weapons to clear the game.
Notably, the game's graphics and music were impressive for console platforms at the time, especially the NES version, which is considered one of the best-looking games on the system. It has high difficulty, making it suitable for players who enjoy a challenge.
Although the SNES version was never officially released, its prototype ROM has circulated online, and interested players can experience this classic game via emulators.
