Banjo-Tooie is a platform action-adventure game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, released for the Nintendo 64 in November 2000. As the sequel to Banjo-Kazooie, it retains the original’s story and gameplay while adding new features like multiplayer modes.
The plot follows protagonist Banjo and his partner Kazooie. After they defeat the evil witch Gruntilda, her sisters launch a new scheme to avenge her. Banjo and Kazooie must set out on another adventure to stop their plan.
During development, the team planned a two-player competitive mode where a second player controlled an enemy to disrupt the main player, but it was cut due to time constraints. They also intended to let players transfer save data from the first game for rewards, which was scrapped because of Nintendo 64 hardware limitations.
Banjo-Tooie earned high praise from critics upon release for its graphics and vast world, though it faced some criticism for frame rate issues.
Notably, in October 2024, Nintendo announced Banjo-Tooie would join the Nintendo Switch Online classic game library. Players with an Expansion Pack subscription can play this classic title for free.
