GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo 64 on August 23, 1997. Based on the 1995 James Bond film *GoldenEye*, it lets players take on the role of MI6 agent James Bond to stop a criminal syndicate from using the anti-satellite "GoldenEye" weapon to attack London. The game features a single-player campaign and a split-screen multiplayer mode for up to four players, with various deathmatch game types to compete in.
During development, the team drew inspiration from 3D shooters like *Virtua Cop* and *Doom*, aiming to deliver a realistic shooting experience on a home console. It introduced a location-based damage system, where damage varies depending on the body part hit, and pioneered the headshot mechanic in first-person shooters.
GoldenEye 007 was a massive global hit, selling over 8 million copies and becoming one of the best-selling games for the N64. Its innovative gameplay mechanics and multiplayer mode had a profound influence on later first-person shooters, and it is widely regarded as a landmark title in the genre.
