Gameplay
Game Overview
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap was developed by Capcom and Flagship, published by Nintendo, and released for Game Boy Advance in Japan on November 4, 2004 and in North America on January 10, 2005, on a 128-megabit cartridge. Hidemaro Fujibayashi directed, with Keiji Inafune producing. It is a prequel to Four Swords: at the Picori Festival, the swordsman Vaati shatters the Picori Blade and turns Princess Zelda to stone, so Link sets out with a talking hat named Ezlo to find the tiny Picori.
Core Gameplay
Structurally it is classic top-down Zelda: roam the Hyrule overworld, work through six dungeons, and revisit old ground with each new item. Three items are new to the series: the Mole Mitts for tunnelling through earthen walls, the Gust Jar for vacuuming up enemies and objects, and the Cane of Pacci for flipping things over. Sword techniques can be learned from sword masters, and certain spots let you split Link into multiple copies you control at once. Kinstone fragments are matched with NPCs and landmarks to fuse, changing the world: opening routes, revealing chests, summoning challengers.
The Shrinking Mechanic
Ezlo can shrink Link to Minish size at portals scattered through the world. Shrinking is more than a way through small holes: a puddle you normally step over becomes an uncrossable lake, and tabletops, stacks of books and cracks in walls turn into multi-level mazes. The same room reads as two completely different spaces depending on your size, and many puzzles only resolve once you start switching back and forth. Once the Four Elements are gathered, the reforged Picori Blade becomes the Four Sword, the only weapon that can bring Vaati down.
Game Tips
- A 128-megabit cartridge, one of the best-looking games on the system
- Shrinking mechanic: the same map becomes a different space entirely at Minish size
- Three new items: Mole Mitts, Gust Jar and Cane of Pacci
- Kinstone fusion with NPCs and landmarks that opens routes, chests and secrets
- Six dungeons, each built around a single new item
- Copy Link ability at set locations, splitting you into several controllable Links
- The Picori Blade becomes the Four Sword once all Four Elements are gathered
Frequently Asked Questions
Ten to twelve hours for the main quest and its six dungeons. Fusing every Kinstone, collecting all heart pieces and completing Carlov's figurine gallery pushes it to fifteen or twenty.
On the easier side for the series. Combat is rarely punishing; the challenge sits in dungeon puzzles and Kinstone matching, and getting stuck usually means you missed a shrink portal nearby.
You can save from the menu at any time across three slots. Data is written to the cartridge's EEPROM, so there is no battery and no password, and nothing is lost when the power goes off.
No. It is a prequel to Four Swords covering the origin of Vaati and the Four Sword, but the story is self-contained and works as a starting point.
Find a shrink portal, usually a small hole, tree root or jar mouth, and step on it. At Minish size a puddle becomes a barrier and grass becomes forest, while gaps you could not enter become routes, so look for a nearby portal whenever a path seems blocked.
