Shadowgate is a point-and-click adventure puzzle game developed by ICOM Simulations. First released for Macintosh in 1987, it was ported to the NES in 1989. Played from a first-person view, you take on the role of a hero guided by the wizard Lakmir, journeying to Castle Shadowgate to stop the evil Warlock Lord from summoning the Behemoth to destroy the world.
Core gameplay involves clicking on-screen items and options to solve puzzles and advance the story. The castle is filled with deadly traps and enemies—carelessness leads to your character’s death. There are many ways to die: burned by dragon fire, attacked by a cyclops, dissolved by acid slime, and more. These death scenes come with detailed text descriptions, adding to the game’s charm.
Torches are a critical item throughout the game. You must always carry a lit torch to light your way. If it goes out, you’re plunged into darkness and the game ends. The limited number of torches in the castle acts as an implicit time limit, ramping up the challenge.
Shadowgate was one of the most popular adventure games of its era, known for its unique puzzle mechanics and high difficulty. Its success led to a 2014 remake featuring new puzzles, characters, and items, plus high-resolution graphics and a revamped UI for an enhanced experience.
