Shadowgate is a first-person point-and-click adventure game developed by ICOM Simulations. First released for the Apple Macintosh in 1987, it was later ported to multiple platforms, including the 1989 Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version. Set in the fantasy world of Tyragon, players take on the role of a hero of royal blood, guided by the wizard Lakmir to the castle "Shadowgate" to stop the evil Warlock Lord from summoning the Behemoth to destroy the world. Known for its rich puzzles and high difficulty, the game requires players to explore rooms, interact with items, and solve puzzles to advance the story. Filled with deadly traps and enemies, a single misstep can lead to death, so frequent saving is essential. Torches are vital—if a torch goes out, the player will die from blocked vision. Shadowgate received widespread acclaim upon release and is regarded as a classic point-and-click adventure classic. Its success led the developer to release multiple sequels and remakes, including *Beyond Shadowgate* (1993) and *Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers* (1999). In 2014, Zojoi studio successfully released a remake via crowdfunding, retaining the core gameplay while modernizing graphics and puzzle design. Overall, Shadowgate stands as a brilliant gem in adventure game history, celebrated by players to this day for its deep story, complex puzzles, and highly challenging experience.
