Shadow of the Ninja (Japanese: Yami no Shigotonin KAGE) is a classic ninja-themed side-scrolling action game developed by Japan’s Natsume and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. Set in 2029, the story follows evil Emperor Garuda, who has conquered the U.S. and established a dictatorship. Players take on the roles of ninjas Hayate and Kaede, infiltrating enemy bases, battling through challenging stages, and ultimately defeating Garuda to free the oppressed people. The game uses a side-scrolling format and supports single-player or two-player co-op. Hayate and Kaede have identical stats. Players can use various weapons including ninja swords, kusarigama, bombs, and shuriken, each with unique attack styles and effects. There are five main stages, each with multiple sub-levels, and players must defeat a boss to advance. On August 29, 2024, Natsume Atari and developer Tengo Project released a remake titled *KAGE ~ Shadow of the Ninja: Reborn*. While preserving the original’s essence, the remake features 16-bit pixel art with fully redrawn stages and enemies for a more polished look. New weapons and ninja tools like a flintlock, cannon shells, kunai, giant club, machete, caltrops, and healing rice balls add depth to combat. The remake also supports two-player co-op, letting friends team up to clear stages together. Original composer Iku Mizutani returned to rearrange the soundtrack, reimagining classic melodies with a modern twist to boost immersion. *KAGE ~ Shadow of the Ninja: Reborn* launched on August 29, 2024, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam), with support for Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and multiple other languages.
