Rockin' Kats is a 1991 side-scrolling action game developed by Atlus for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Players control Willy, a jazz-playing cat whose girlfriend Jill is kidnapped by local crime boss Mugsy. To rescue Jill, Willy must traverse seven distinct levels and fight fierce battles against canine gangsters.
The game's standout feature is Willy's spring-loaded punch gun. It serves not only as a weapon to attack enemies but also to grab objects, hook onto fixed points for spinning jumps, and even propel Willy in certain situations to help him cross obstacles or reach high places. Mastering the punch gun is key to beating the game.
There are five main levels; the first four can be played in any order, set in locations like a downtown district, sky flight, amusement park, and western adventure. Each level features unique enemies and boss fights, offering plenty of challenge. After completing the first four levels, the fifth level unlocks, bringing the final challenge.
Additionally, the game includes a "Shopping Channel" where players can use collected coins to buy items like bombs, double-ball gloves, hammer gloves, and jet shoes to boost Willy's abilities. There's also a "Challenge Channel" with mini-games such as roulette and basketball, where players can earn extra coins and lives.
With its unique weapon design, varied levels, and rich gameplay content, Rockin' Kats is a beloved classic on the NES platform.
