Pokémon Stadium (Japanese: Pokemon Sutajiamu) is a battle simulation game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It launched exclusively for the Nintendo 64 in Japan on August 1, 1998, and was never released in other regions; the international "Pokémon Stadium" corresponds to Japan’s Pokémon Stadium 2. Key features include: - Battle Mode: Fight against other players or NPCs. - Organization Tool: Move Pokémon and items between your party, PC storage, and in-game boxes. - Overview Feature: View your Pokémon roster and their stats. - Pokédex Function: Browse a 3D version of the Pokémon Pokédex. - Team Registration: Save a custom team for quick use. - Party Viewer: Check your current active Pokémon party. - GB Mode: Play first-generation Pokémon titles on the N64. For battles, there are Free Battle and Tournament modes. Free Battle lets players use Pokémon transferred via the 64GB Pak or 8 preset teams against others, with three level tiers: 1–30, 50–55, and Free Level. Tournament mode lets players challenge real-world competitors, including teams from the 1997 and 1998 Nintendo Cup events. Clearing tournaments earns points, which unlock a speed boost for GB Mode Pokémon games. 40 Pokémon are usable in battle, most taken from 1997 Nintendo Cup competitors’ teams. Notably, if players beat the Master Ball tier of the 1–30 level tournament with a Pikachu on their team, that Pikachu will automatically learn Surf. Pokémon Stadium was the first Pokémon game not developed by GAME FREAK, with core production handled by HAL Laboratory. The late Satoru Iwata—then a HAL programmer and later Nintendo’s president—ported the Red/Green/Blue game code in just one week without reference documentation, and wrote the base program code for this title.
