Ninja JaJaMaru: Ginga Daisakusen is an action platformer released by Jaleco for the NES on March 29, 1991. As the fifth entry in the Ninja JaJaMaru series, it first introduced dual protagonists: players can choose to play as Ninja JaJaMaru or Princess Sakura.
The story follows the two leads as they watch a meteor shower and witness a UFO crash. They learn that the Galaxy King’s planet has been turned into a robot-filled mechanical world by the evil Don Destroida. To save the universe, they take hammers from the Galaxy King and fly a spaceship into space to begin their adventure.
Gameplay draws inspiration from the popular Super Mario Bros. 3 of the era, with larger, more cartoonish character designs. Players defeat enemies by jumping on them; blocks scattered across levels hold various power-ups that grant different abilities. A status bar at the bottom of the screen shows remaining lives, current items, and other info. In some levels, players can enter hidden areas through pipes.
The game also introduces a unique "charge dash" mechanic. When standing still, players hold the B button to charge; releasing it lets them run at high speed and make higher, longer jumps. This skill is especially important for crossing large gaps or tall obstacles. When fully charged, the character rolls in mid-air and can slash enemies while jumping, making it easier to navigate complex areas. However, if charged too long, the character gets tired and cannot move temporarily, leaving them open to enemy attacks.
The two protagonists differ in charge speed and jump ability: JaJaMaru charges faster, while Princess Sakura has better jump power during dashes. Notably, the game was originally planned to launch in Western markets under the name "Squashed," but the release never happened.
