Renegade (Japanese: Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun), a 1986 arcade game developed by Technōs Japan and published by Taito, was ported to the NES in 1987. As the first entry in the Kunio-kun series, it is set in 1980s Japanese delinquent culture, following protagonist Kunio as he fights various gangs to rescue his friend Hiroshi. This side-scrolling beat 'em up lets players use Kunio’s moves like punches, flying kicks and back suplexes to defeat enemies across four levels set in Shinjuku Station, Tokyo Bay Highway and Shinjuku Kabukicho, each with unique foes and challenges. With its distinct theme and gameplay, Renegade laid the foundation for the Kunio-kun series and inspired all later installments.
