Play Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (Europe) (Rev 1)
Game Introduction
Punch-Out!! is a boxing sports game developed and published by Nintendo in 1987. Players take on the role of young boxer Little Mac, who, under the guidance of coach Doc Louis, challenges opponents from around the world with the ultimate goal of winning the world boxing championship title. The game uses a third-person perspective, requiring players to observe opponents' action cues to dodge and counterattack. Each opponent has unique attack patterns and weaknesses, and players need to find the best response strategies through observation and practice. The game's final boss was then heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, whose appearance added great challenge and buzz to the game. Due to the expiration of Tyson's endorsement contract in 1989, the game was renamed Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream in 1990, and the final boss was replaced by the fictional character Mr. Dream. With its unique gameplay and high-difficulty challenges, the game became one of the most popular titles on the NES platform and is still fondly discussed by players to this day.
Gameplay
Game Overview
Nintendo rebuilt its arcade Punch-Out!! for the NES in 1987: North America got it on October 18, Japan on November 21 and Europe on December 15, and this European Rev 1 is the version that sat on shop shelves over there. You play Little Mac, an undersized kid working his way up from the Minor Circuit to the world title under the eye of his trainer Doc Louis. The final bout, billed as the Dream Fight, is against Mike Tyson, who at the time was the real, undefeated heavyweight champion of the world.
Core Gameplay
Everything is played from behind Mac's semi-transparent back, so the whole game is reading tells: watch what the opponent does before he throws, then dodge, duck or block and punish the opening. Your health is a heart meter - a clean hit costs three hearts, a blocked or dodged punch costs one - and when it empties Mac turns pink, slumps over and cannot throw until he has avoided enough punches to recover. Land counters to earn stars, up to three at once, and press Start to spend one on the uppercut. Bouts end by knockout, technical knockout after three knockdowns in a round, or on points, and Mac can only get up three times.
Single-Player Experience
It is a single-player game with no versus mode, and progress is carried by password. Lose a ranked bout and you get a rematch, but losing to Tyson ends the run immediately, as does a third loss overall. Tyson appears with his real numbers - 21 years old, 220 lbs, 31 wins from 31 fights with 27 by knockout - and he fights like it. For the first ninety seconds of round one he throws nothing but uppercuts that put you on the canvas in one hit, and even blocking them drains your meter. Survive that stretch and the damage drops off. The one reliable window is his blink: answer it with a jab and you get a star. If you want a harder route, the password 135-792-468 unlocks the hidden Another World Circuit.
Game Tips
- Pattern-reading boxing: every opponent has fixed tells and openings, so it is about observation and memorisation
- Heart meter and star system: bank up to three stars, then press Start for the uppercut
- Eleven opponents from Glass Joe through Super Macho Man, with Mike Tyson as the Dream Fight
- Tyson appears with his real statistics: 21 years old, 220 lbs, 31-0 with 27 knockouts
- His one-hit knockdown uppercuts in the opening ninety seconds are the most famous difficulty wall on the NES
- Password 135-792-468 unlocks the hidden Another World Circuit: nine fights, no losses allowed
- After the licence expired in 1990 the game was reissued as Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream with a fictional final boss
Frequently Asked Questions
There are eleven opponents, and once you know the patterns a full run takes about forty minutes. The real time investment is learning those patterns, particularly against Super Macho Man and Tyson.
There is a password system that tracks which opponent you have reached, but no battery save. Certain numbers entered at the password screen also unlock hidden content.
Yes. For the first ninety seconds he throws nothing but uppercuts that knock you down in one hit, and blocking them still costs you most of your meter - you simply have to survive that stretch. The one reliable window is his blink: answer it with a jab and you get a star.
The content is the same; Rev 1 is simply a later European revision. After the Tyson licence expired in 1990 Nintendo reissued the game as Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream with a fictional final boss, and later Virtual Console and Switch Online releases use that version.
No. It is single-player throughout, with no versus mode.
