Game Introduction

Metroid Fusion (released as 'Miteluode Ronghe' by iQue in China) is a gripping action-adventure game and the fourth main installment in the Metroid saga. Players guide bounty hunter Samus Aran through the biological space station B.S.L., which has been infested by the deadly X Parasites. After being infected and saved by a Metroid vaccine, Samus gains the ability to absorb these parasites. The game features a more narrative-driven structure than its predecessors, tense atmosphere, and exploration-based gameplay as Samus hunts down the SA-X, a terrifying mimic of her former self.

Gameplay

Game Overview

Metroid Fusion is the fourth mainline entry, made by Nintendo R&D1, written and directed by Yoshio Sakamoto, released in North America on November 18, 2002 and in Japan on February 14, 2003. iQue published the official Simplified Chinese version in mainland China on March 2, 2006. The story follows Super Metroid: infected by the X Parasites on SR388 and saved by a Metroid-based vaccine, Samus is sent to the Biologic Space Laboratories research station.

Core Gameplay

The station is divided into sectors: SRX, TRO, PYR, AQA, ARC and NOX. Exploration is more directed than in Super Metroid, with navigation rooms issuing explicit objectives and unlocking areas, though routing is still up to you. Abilities include the ice beam, diffusion missiles, ice missiles and super missiles, plus wall and ceiling climbing. Defeated enemies release X Parasites, which Samus absorbs to restore health and ammunition. The SA-X, a perfect copy of Samus at full power, stalks you through several set pieces and cannot be fought head on, only avoided.

The Official iQue Chinese Release

This Chinese edition was localised and published by iQue rather than patched by fans. Menus, navigation room orders and story text are all properly proofread Simplified Chinese, terminology matches the iQue release of Zero Mission, and the font and layout were redone for the GBA screen. The Game Boy Advance has no region lock, so the iQue cartridge works in any GBA or GBA SP. Saves are written to the cartridge itself, with no passwords and no battery to worry about. Finishing the game unlocks a gallery and extra difficulty modes, and linking to Metroid Prime on GameCube unlocks the original NES Metroid.

  • Linking with Metroid Prime on GameCube unlocks the original NES Metroid

Frequently Asked Questions

The iQue edition is a legitimate cartridge with a Nintendo-approved translation: consistent terminology, fonts and layout redone for the handheld screen, and navigation orders and story in properly proofread Simplified Chinese. Patched ROMs are fan jobs of varying quality that often carry machine-translated lines, text overflow and display glitches.

Six to eight hours on a first run. It is shorter than Super Metroid, so an experienced player finishes in under three hours, with 100% collection around four to five.

It is strongly recommended. Fusion continues directly from its ending, and both the X Parasites and the Metroid vaccine depend on that story. It is still playable blind, but the plot lands much harder with the context.

It guides you more than earlier entries, so getting lost is unlikely, but the SA-X encounters and several bosses stay tense. Easy, Normal and Hard modes unlock after you finish.

No. Progress is written to the cartridge chip, so there are no passwords and no battery involved, and saves survive power loss, unlike the handful of GBA carts that rely on a cell.
