Lode Runner is a classic puzzle-action game developed by Douglas E. Smith in 1983 and published by Brøderbund. First released on the Apple II, it was later ported to multiple platforms including Nintendo's Famicom/NES. In the game, players take on the role of a "lode runner" who must collect all gold nuggets in mazes filled with gold, brick walls, and ladders while evading enemies. Players cannot jump or directly attack enemies, but can dig through bricks to set traps and temporarily trap enemies to progress through levels. Once all gold is collected, a ladder to the next level appears, which players must climb to complete the stage. Lode Runner features 150 meticulously designed levels that offer plenty of challenge. It also includes a level editor, allowing players to create and share their own levels—a feature extremely rare for games of its era. The game was a huge global success, especially in the Japanese market. Hudson Soft ported it to the Famicom, selling around 1.5 million copies in Japan, making it one of the first Western video games to find major success in the country. With its unique gameplay and innovative level editing feature, Lode Runner is a classic in video game history that has had a profound influence on the development of subsequent games.
