Maison Ikkoku is an adventure game adapted from Rumiko Takahashi’s manga of the same name. First launched by Micro Cabin in late 1986 on popular Japanese home computers, it was ported to the Famicom by Bothtec in 1988.
Set in Ikkoku-kan, a Tokyo suburban boarding house, the story follows residents’ lives, centering on the romance between Yusaku Godai and Kyoko Otonashi. Players take on the role of Yusaku, completing tasks like dodging Yotsuya’s pranks, raising party funds, and confessing his love to Kyoko. Locations extend beyond Ikkoku-kan to Tokyo spots such as Soichiro’s grave, the Chachamaru bar, and the train station.
As a graphic text adventure, the game advances the plot through player action choices. The goal is to help Yusaku study hard amid chaos, get into college, and win Kyoko’s heart along the way.
Faithfully recreating the original manga’s plot and characters, Maison Ikkoku is beloved by fans. Its unique gameplay and touching story make it a highly praised classic adventure game on the NES platform.
