Magician is a side-scrolling action RPG developed by Eurocom and published by Taxan, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. Set in the peaceful kingdom of Merlwood, the game follows evil sorcerer Abadon, who summons dark creatures, builds his castle, and kills Merlwood’s strongest mages to seize control. Players take on the role of Paul, a young magic apprentice who abandons his journey to learn ancient magic secrets to become Merlwood’s last hope against Abadon.
Gameplay involves guiding Paul through puzzles and mazes, collecting items to learn new spells, and acquiring weapons for specific magic or defense. Paul interacts with various characters for help, and players must manage his health, food, and water levels—all of which deplete over time and require replenishment. The game features a unique magic system where players combine syllables to form magic words, with each spell requiring its own word to learn and cast. Helping NPCs and completing quests earns Paul experience, which increases his maximum mana and mage rank. A battery-backed save system lets players save progress anytime, with up to 15 saves across four save slots.
