Totally Rad (Japanese: Majikku Jon) is a 2D action platformer developed by Aicom and published by Jaleco. It first launched for the Famicom in Japan on September 28, 1990, and later released in North America and Europe. The protagonist, Jake (known as John in the Japanese version), is an apprentice magician trained by Zebediah Pong (simply called Pong in Japan). During his training, his girlfriend Allison (Yuu in the Japanese version) is kidnapped by mysterious figures. To rescue her, Jake sets off on an adventure, uncovers the conspiracy behind the abduction, and ultimately faces an evil king plotting to invade the surface world with an underground army. The game is a side-scrolling title where players control Jake through multiple levels, fight various enemies, and take on diverse, challenging boss battles. Jake can use multiple magic spells to attack foes, summon special abilities, and even transform into different animal forms such as a cat, bird, and fish—each with unique abilities and agility. Notably, the Japanese and North American versions have different character designs. The Japanese release features two 10- to 12-year-old characters in a Japanese cartoon style, while the US version reworks them as California teens who use 1980s "surfer" slang. Overall, Totally Rad delivers a unique gaming experience with its rich magic system, varied transformation abilities, and engaging story.
