Mach Rider is a racing game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, first released for the Japanese Famicom on November 21, 1985. Set on Earth in 2112, players control Mach Rider, riding a high-performance motorcycle through regions occupied by the evil Quadrunners to find survivors and defeat enemies. The game features four modes: 1. **Fighting Course**: Navigate 10 distinct tracks, avoid obstacles and eliminate enemies. Choose between Route A or B after each track for different challenges. 2. **Endurance Course**: Complete a set distance within a time limit, dodging obstacles and enemies. Being destroyed costs time. 3. **Solo Course**: Similar to Endurance Course, but with no enemies. 4. **Design Mode**: Create custom tracks to play in other modes. The original used the Famicom Data Recorder (Japan-only) to save tracks; later Virtual Console releases let players save tracks to system memory. Controls are relatively complex: use the D-pad to steer left/right and shift between 4 gears, A button to accelerate, B button to fire a machine gun and clear obstacles/enemies ahead. Notably, Nintendo released a plastic racing toy named "Mach Rider" back in 1972, sharing the game’s title. With its unique setting and varied modes, Mach Rider is one of the classic titles of the Famicom era.
