Game Introduction
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is a unique departure for the series, featuring a non-linear, Metroid-style open world on the Game Boy Advance. When Kirby is split into four colors, he must explore the Mirror World to rescue Meta Knight. This title supports 4-player cooperative play via the GBA Link Cable, allowing friends to explore the massive map independently or call each other for help using a cell phone mechanic. With tons of copy abilities, hidden treasures, and epic boss fights, it is one of the most ambitious and replayable Kirby games ever made, offering a vast world of secrets to discover.
Gameplay
Game Overview
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror reached the Game Boy Advance in October 2004, developed by HAL Laboratory together with Flagship. A dark entity named Dark Mind has poisoned the Mirror World, and Meta Knight slices Kirby into four differently colored copies before flying off to handle it himself. The four Kirbys chase after him on a Warp Star, gathering mirror shards and clearing a boss in each region.
Core Gameplay
Instead of the series' usual string of self-contained stages, the whole adventure is one interconnected map. Warp mirrors and warp stars tie the regions together, and returning to an earlier room with a newly copied ability is how you make progress. Inhaling an enemy still copies its power, and beyond returning favorites like Sword, Fire and UFO, this entry adds the arrow-firing Cupid and the Smash ability built from Kirby's moveset in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Chests, hidden doors and switch puzzles turn up in almost every screen, so exploring is the actual progression system.
Copy Abilities and Multiplayer
The R button pulls out Kirby's cell phone and summons the other three Kirbys on the spot. Played alone they act as AI helpers that build stacks, hold down switches and clear blockages; hook four Game Boy Advance systems together with a link cable and each player drives one Kirby across the entire map independently. Three sub-games - Speed Eaters, Crackity Hack and Kirby Wave Ride - round out the package and support up to four players as well.
Game Tips
- One large connected map: themed regions branch off a central hub, linked by warp mirrors and warp stars
- Cell phone summoning on the R button calls the other three Kirbys in, so solo players still get help with stacks and switches
- New copy abilities including Cupid (fires arrows) and Smash, built from Kirby's Super Smash Bros. Melee moveset
- Four-player co-op through the main game with a GBA link cable (one cartridge per player); the three sub-games need only one
- Mirrors, chests and hidden rooms usually require a specific ability, which turns collection into real progression
- Each region boss drops a mirror shard, and the path to the final world only opens once they are all gathered
Frequently Asked Questions
The main path runs about six hours. Going after the hidden rooms, chests and collectibles pushes it past ten hours, since the maze sends you back through old areas constantly.
It sits on the easier end of the series. Kirby can float indefinitely, mistakes rarely cost much, and the difficulty comes from later bosses and ability-gated routes rather than precision platforming.
Nintendo's official spec calls for one Game Pak per player for the linked main game, while the three sub-games only need a single cartridge to play with up to four people.
No. The story stands on its own, and the only thing you need to know is that inhaling an enemy copies its ability - which the game also explains in-game.
Emulated GBA link cable support is very limited, so four-player co-op is effectively unavailable. The cell phone AI companions cover most of what multiplayer offers, so the single-player experience remains complete.
