The Legend of Kage (Japanese: Kage no Densetsu) is a 1985 action game developed and published by Japanese studio Taito. First launched for arcades, it was ported to the Nintendo NES on April 18, 1986.
Set in late Edo-period Japan, players take on the role of Kage, a young Iga ninja tasked with rescuing Princess Kiri from an evil army. The game has three chapters: Aoba no Shō, Kōyō no Shō, and Yuki no Shō, each with four levels: forest, secret passage, castle wall, and demon castle.
Players defeat fire-breathing Yōbō enemies in the forest, eliminate enough enemy ninjas in the secret passage, climb the castle wall via jumps, and finally save the princess in the demon castle. However, the princess is recaptured repeatedly, advancing to the next chapter with shifted scenery and enemy colors to reflect seasonal changes.
Controls are simple and intuitive: Kage uses shuriken and a short blade as weapons, and can jump high to move freely across the screen. With tight pacing and high challenge, it is widely loved by players.
With its unique setting and gameplay, The Legend of Kage is a classic NES title that left a deep impression on gamers.
