Image Fight is a vertical-scrolling shooter developed by Japan's Irem and released in 1988. It first launched in arcades, then was ported to home platforms like the NES, PC Engine, and Sharp X68000 in 1990.
Set in a future where Earth is invaded by aliens and the lunar base is destroyed, players pilot the OF-1 fighter through multiple stages, battling enemy craft and defenses before facing the alien leader.
Its unique mechanics include collectible red and blue Pods. Red Pods adjust their fire angle based on movement, while blue Pods fire straight forward. Up to three Pods can be equipped to boost firepower, plus various front weapons for stronger attacks.
There are five simulation training stages; players must achieve a 90%+ destruction rate to unlock real combat stages, or complete extra training if they fall short.
Popular in Japan after launch, it was named one of the most successful arcade games of December 1988 by *Game Machine* magazine, and has had a lasting influence as an inspiration for later shooters.
