Gorby's Pipeline Great Strategy is a 1991 puzzle game developed by Compile and published by Tokuma Shoten, first released for Nintendo Famicom, MSX2, and FM Towns. Set amid improved Japan-Soviet relations, it features a protagonist based on Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, tasked with building a Moscow-Tokyo pipeline to strengthen bilateral ties. In the game, players control a girl in traditional Russian clothing, pushing variously shaped pipe pieces from the top of the screen into a vertical play area. A second girl uses signal flags to indicate pipe placement spots. Players must quickly rotate and position the pipes to direct water flow from the inlet on one side of the screen to the outlet on the other. Successfully connecting the inlet and outlet clears that row of pipes and awards points. If water hits a dead end, a new layer of pipe pieces is added, ramping up difficulty. The game ends when stacked pipes reach the top of the screen. Clearing a set number of pipe rows unlocks the next level. The soundtrack features classic Russian works, including Mussorgsky’s *The Great Gate of Kiev* (from *Pictures at an Exhibition*), Tchaikovsky’s *Swan Lake* main theme, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s *Flight of the Bumblebee*, creating a rich cultural atmosphere. Notably, the cover art was created by Kōzen Shimoura, and the game received permission from the Soviet Embassy to use Gorbachev’s name and likeness. Overall, Gorby's Pipeline Great Strategy delivers a challenging yet fun experience with its unique gameplay and cultural setting.
