Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball is an NES softball game developed by TOSE and published by Brøderbund, first released on October 27, 1989. It supports single-player and two-player modes. Players can pick 10 out of 60 unique fictional players to form their own team and compete. Each player has distinct skills and traits: for example, Diablo looks like a demon, hits with a club but runs slowly; Zelda looks like a witch and hits with a broom; Froggy hops while running; Casey can float in the air on defense.
The game offers six different playing fields, each with unique features and rules:
- Sandlot: A traditional sandlot field with tall grass and rocks that may affect gameplay. A hit past the "home run line" counts as a home run.
- Park: There's a pond in foul territory, and trees, benches and mud pits beyond the home run line that may impact play.
- Cliff: There's a fence in right field; a ball rolling under the fence counts as an automatic double.
- School: Designed after a school playground. A hit past the home run line is a home run, but breaking a school building window results in an out.
- Island: Similar to a professional field, with an outfield fence.
- Professional: A standard field, unlocked only after beating the computer in single-player mode.
In single-player mode, players must win one game on each field, and finally challenge the strong all-female team "The Amazons" to complete the game. In two-player mode, players can play an exhibition game. The rules are similar to baseball, with each game lasting a maximum of seven innings, unless extra innings are needed to decide a winner. The game also has a "mercy rule": if one team leads by 10 or more runs after a full inning, the game ends early.
