Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness (Japanese: Akumajō Dracula Mokushiroku Gaiden LEGEND OF CORNELL) is an action-adventure game developed by Konami and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It is the second Castlevania title for the N64, featuring full 3D graphics that bring a vivid, atmospheric take on the Castlevania universe. Set before the events of Castlevania (the first N64 entry), the game follows Cornell, a young werewolf warrior, on a quest to rescue his kidnapped sister Ada by venturing deep into Dracula’s castle. Unlockable playable characters include Henry Oldrey, a young knight of the Eastern Orthodox Church, plus returning protagonists Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Belnades — each with their own unique storylines and abilities. The game introduces dynamic time and weather systems, requiring players to explore levels, solve puzzles, and battle enemies across shifting day-night cycles and weather conditions. A notable mechanic is vampirism: if a playable character is bitten by a vampire and not purified in time, they will turn into a vampire at midnight, resulting in a game over. The game also contains hidden cheat codes. In 2024, players discovered a cheat sequence that unlocks all playable characters without completing the game, boosting its replay value. Overall, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness retains the series’ classic elements while pioneering 3D gameplay, delivering a fresh experience for fans.
