GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter developed by Rare, adapted from the 1995 James Bond film *GoldenEye*. Released on August 23, 1997 for the Nintendo 64, players take on the role of British Secret Service agent James Bond to stop a criminal organization from attacking London with the anti-satellite weapon "GoldenEye". It features a single-player mode and a split-screen multiplayer mode for up to four players across various game types.
During development, influenced by titles like *Virtua Cop*, the team initially planned an on-rails shooter before switching to a first-person perspective. The game introduced innovative elements such as stealth mechanics, headshot mechanics, and manual reloading, with split-screen multiplayer added late in development for up to four players.
GoldenEye 007 holds a pivotal place in first-person shooter history, expanding the potential of console FPS games and marking the genre's shift from the *Doom* style to a more realistic approach. Its varied mission objectives, scoped sniper rifle, stealth elements, and multiplayer deathmatch became standards for later titles in the genre.
In 2010, Activision released a remake for Wii and Nintendo DS, followed by the high-definition remaster *GoldenEye 007: Reloaded* for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 the next year.
