Romance of the Three Kingdoms II: Overlord of the Continent is a historical strategy simulation game released by Namco for the NES on June 10, 1992. As the sequel to Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Overlord of the Central Plains, it features significantly improved systems and graphics. Set in the late Eastern Han Dynasty’s Three Kingdoms period, players choose a ruler like Liu Bei, Liu Zhang, Sun Ce, Cao Cao, Ma Teng, Yuan Shao, or Dong Zhuo to conquer all of China. It introduces a general experience and level system, where generals grow by gaining experience in battle. For internal affairs, players manage taxes and develop agriculture, commerce, and industry to boost resource output. Diplomatic options like alliances, sowing discord, and recruiting add strategic depth. In battles, formation choices and terrain use make warfare highly tactical. Widely popular in mainland China, it was many players’ first strategy game. A 1998 PlayStation remake enhanced its graphics and music.
