Rockin' Kats is a side-scrolling action game released by Atlus for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1991. Players control Willy, a jazz cat whose girlfriend Jill is kidnapped by local crime boss Mugsy. To save Jill, Willy must fight through seven distinct levels and battle Mugsy's henchmen.
The game's standout feature is Willy's spring-loaded punch gun. It serves as both a weapon to attack enemies and a tool to grab objects, hook onto fixed points for spinning jumps, and even bounce across dangerous areas. Mastering the punch gun is key to beating the game.
There are five main levels: the first four can be played in any order, set in downtown, aerial flight, amusement park, and western adventure scenes. The fifth level unlocks after completing the first four. A "Shopping Channel" lets players use in-game money to buy items like bombs, double-ball gloves, hammer gloves, and jet shoes to boost Willy's abilities.
A "Bonus Channel" offers mini-games like roulette, pipe toss, and basketball, where players can earn extra money and lives.
After finishing all levels and watching the credits, players unlock a hidden level. It's extremely challenging: Willy can't use previously obtained items, has only three lives, and health doesn't reset between sub-levels.
With its unique weapon design, varied levels, and challenging gameplay, Rockin' Kats is a beloved classic on the NES platform.
