Pokémon Stadium (Japanese: Pokemon Sutajiamu) is the first 3D battle simulation game in the Pokémon franchise, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It launched exclusively for the Nintendo 64 in Japan on August 1, 1998.
The game features two main battle modes: Free Battle and Tournament Mode. In Free Battle, players can import Pokémon from *Pokémon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow* via the 64GB Transfer Pak, or choose from 8 preset team configurations to battle other players or NPCs. Free Battle is split into three level tiers: 1–30, 50–55, and Open Level.
Tournament Mode lets players compete against teams based on real-world Pokémon tournament participants. The 1–30 level tournament is adapted from the 1998 Nintendo Cup, with four ranks: Poké Ball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, and Master Ball; the 50–55 level tournament uses teams from the 1997 Nintendo Cup. Clearing tournaments earns points, which can be used to speed up gameplay of Pokémon series titles in the GB mode.
40 Pokémon are available for battle, most of which were used by competitors in the 1997 Nintendo Cup. A notable bonus: if players beat the 1–30 level Master Ball tournament with a Pikachu on their team, that Pikachu will automatically learn the move Surf.
Pokémon Stadium is the first Pokémon game not developed by GAME FREAK, with production handled by HAL Laboratory. Satoru Iwata, then a programmer at HAL Laboratory and later president of Nintendo, ported the code from *Red/Green/Blue* and wrote the core program for this title in just one week, with no reference documentation.
Since this first entry was only released in Japan, the *Pokémon Stadium* known to Western players actually corresponds to Japan’s *Pokémon Stadium 2*.
