Mick & Mack as the Global Gladiators is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Virgin Games in 1992. First released for the Sega Genesis, it was later ported to platforms including the Master System, Game Gear, and Amiga. Set against the backdrop of the McDonald’s fast food chain, the game delivers a strong environmental theme.
In the game, players can choose to control either Mick or Mack, traversing four unique worlds: Slime World, Mystical Forest, Toxi-town, and Arctic World. Each world features multiple sub-levels, and players must collect a set number of Golden Arches to advance. The goal is to defeat enemies by shooting sticky projectiles and complete each level within the time limit.
The development team was led by David Perry, who has worked on many well-known games. The animation, background art, and music were created by Mike Dietz, Christian Laursen, and Tommy Tallarico respectively. David Bishop served as the game’s designer, and Bill Anderson handled the level design.
Global Gladiators received positive reviews upon release. Sega Pro magazine gave it an overall score of 93/100, praising its challenge, stunning graphics, and dynamic music. Mega Action magazine also awarded it a 93% rating, describing it as "an excellent game with really great character animation."
Notably, the NES and Super NES versions of the game were never completed during development for undisclosed reasons, though prototype ROMs have since leaked.
